PERSONALITY: Mickey's just a fun guy to have around. He's outgoing, chatty, a loyal friend, with a vivacious personality and a great sense of humor! He can at one moment be the life of a party, and then a calm, sympathetic shoulder to cry on. When things are going rough, he's the kind of friend to have in your corner.
He's also a psychopathic serial killer, but hey, he's only human. Everyone's got their flaws.
On the surface, Mickey's a quick-witted fast-talker who can hold his own in a debate with the most obsessive of nerds (coughRandy), without coming across as off-puttingly geeky (coughRANDY). He's like an artsy jock, a film studies nerd who walks around shooting documentaries but can also bro down with frat guys and date the hot brainy girl. Mickey's a chatty person, and he's almost always ready with a comeback, a counterpoint, a quick retort, which he'll deliver with confidence. Or cockiness. But either way, he's obviously not a shy wallflower, or a socially inept geek.
Even if chunks of his personality are just an act, Mickey's got a charm to him that makes it easy to slide past people's defenses. Not only is he a part of Sidney's friend circle, but he's totally entrenched in it, having clearly played the long game. He's not some suspicious newcomer; he's best friends with her boyfriend, Derek (RIP Billy), and he's dating her new BFF Hallie (RIP Tatum). This shows that for all his homicidal impulses, Mickey's strategic and patient, able to play the part of the cool, fun-loving, totally-not-crazy film student for a few semesters before he starts his grand killing spree.
On top of that charm, Mickey's also extremely manipulative. He successfully casts suspicion onto others as his own murder spree plays out, deflecting onto Randy (who's clearly gone off the deep end after surviving the first killing spree!) and Derek (just like last time: the boyfriend did it!). Even when he's got Derek helpless and tied up, and has outed himself as Ghostface, he manages to mess with Sidney's head and get her to doubt her boyfriend before he kills him.
Not surprisingly (considering he's a serial killer), Mickey's got a sadistic streak to him. It's not enough to systematically dispatch his own friend circle-- with the ultimate goal being Sidney-- he also clearly enjoys playing with his food, like when he poses as Maureen's boyfriend before attacking her. Throughout the movie, he's shown comforting Sidney, or supporting Derek, building them up while poking at their weaknesses. He displays kindness and sympathy after Sidney survives an attack from Ghostface, all while dropping 'innocent' comments to make her doubt Derek. Then he helps Derek stage a goofy public serenade to declare his love for Sidney, because he's such a great wingman. And then, after he murders Derek in front of Sidney, he taunts her for her trauma, rubbing in just how perfect and innocent Derek was, if only Sidney didn't have such trust issues. There's no real point to this, except to play with her before he goes for the kill.
Even if Debbie Loomis used him as a pawn in her revenge against Sidney-- the muscle, the brawn to her brains-- Mickey generally demonstrates a cleverness, patience, and subtlety that shows he isn't just some dumb attack dog. He is, however, young, and likely spent most of his life neglected until Debbie came along to give him guidance and direction. In a way, even if she was using him, she was something of a mother figure to him, enrolling him in college, paying his tuition, referring to him as a 'good boy.' The fact that Mickey didn't see her betrayal coming probably indicates a major blind spot where mentors (or mother figures) are concerned, a weakness that'll likely follow him into game.
Though we don't know much at all about his past, it's implied that he's got the usual Gen X problems, but majorly amplified. Raised by movies and spending way too much time lurking the 90s equivalent of ~the Dark Web~, Mickey was probably isolated and neglected in his home life. He craves attention and the spotlight, which is why his entire motive boils down to fame. He doesn't kill for revenge; he just wants a huge media circus of a trial. His entire goal is to get caught and to have the eyes of the nation on him.
If Mickey weren't such a sick fuck (by his own admission), it would almost be sad, because he clearly has charm and charisma, the ability to easily make friends, and the intelligence to succeed in life. But instead he threw it all away to be a fame seeking serial killer. Ah well, c'est la vie!
